In spring 2000, Art and I embarked on a week-long holiday in Spain. We spent most of the time in Andalucía (in the south): Seville, Córdoba, and Granada. Then we moved to Madrid and visited Toledo and some other sites. I hoped to write about our experiences after we returned, but now it’s been a few years and (apart from these pictures) the memories are hazy. So I’ll take inspiration from the great Mark Twain: Four of us […] spent seven delightful days in Seville, Córdoba, Cadiz, and wandering through the pleasant rural scenery of Andalucía, the garden of Old Spain. Seville The picture at left might well be my favorite from this batch. It is the main cathedral in Seville, from a rather peculiar angle. The best advice I know about composition is this: don’t take the first shot you see. If possible, walk all the way around your subject. Try out different elevations and angles. (Naturally, this advice is useless for action shots or other short-lived subjects!) In Seville, we stayed at the Hostal Arias on Calle Mariana de Pineda, right in the Barrio de Santa Cruz.

Mezquita Cathedral

Córdoba This was a tremendously beautiful city, but we stayed only one night, at Hotel Los Omeyas.

Granada Granada is, of course, home to the Alhambra. For us, this was just a day trip, a couple hours on a bus from Seville. I hoped to capture the play of sunlight on the interior walls (see below).

I went to Spain in 2003 and the Alhambra was definitely my favorite! I had learned about all these places for so long during high school and I was finally able to see them. It was great.
